sit down get down in the sun

i spent two weeks in tucson between when i left peñasco and my move to la jolla. it was excellent - i organized myself, rested, basically did nothing. one of the weekends i was there, iván came up from peñasco and we went on a mini-vacation to northern arizona to camp and to a first friday art walk in flagstaff.

the sedona area is crazy busy in the summer - full of tourists all there to see the beautiful red rocks and go swimming in oak creek. so we decided to stay in a small campground (13 sites) about 20 miles down the road on beaver creek. fabulous little campground, close to some good hikes, and close to sedona.

beaver creek was great. fun to hike a bit, go swimming (even though freezing cold!), torturing the crawfish, and soaking in the sun. we very literally did nothing, so it was a true vacation.

and of course we spent a day in sedona to marvel at the rocks. we went on a great little hike (my arm was in a sling, so wasn't up for any big intense hikes) around bell rock, with some great views.

daydreamed about how to make your life better by leaving town

i thought that leaving peñasco would be harder than it actually was. i felt very ready to leave. yes, i had a great year (a life-changing year, really. when you think about it, everything in my life has changed since i went to peñasco), but i felt like it was time to leave and move on to the next thing. i also got really sick the last week (still not sure with what exactly) and was forbidden by the doctor to eat out, drink alcohol, eat gluten, cheese, etc. so, it didn't really make for a big goodbye party or anything. but, before i got sick, i had a wonderful last weekend in peñasco:

i very rarely went tidepooling just by myself - almost always on a tour or with a group, so i definitely wanted to go over to station beach and poke around on my own, able to take pictures without having to explain things. plus i love tidepooling in the spring since all the nudibranchs are out! and it was a fairly successful outing.

then, in the afternoon, iván and i decided to go for an ice cream in town. as we're driving into town, he parks near the harbor, which i didn't understand at all. so i ask what we're doing and he tells me we're going on a booze cruise. i knew he was joking, and then we really do wander down to the docks and he says, "we're going out with your friends from del mar" and i really didn't believe him at this point, but i keep following him, and as we near del mar's catamaran, i see the boat full of people ... and then i realized it was full of CEDO people. they had organized a surprise for us to go out on a sunset cruise as a goodbye.

i was so touched. had tears in my eyes and everything.

as we left the port, we were joined by dolphins, swimming under the net and riding in our wake. i'm not one to get all googly-eyed for dolphins, but it was still pretty cool.

momma visits!

i have extremely supportive parents – and i am very lucky in that they have made a point (ever since i began to set out on my various adventures) to come visit me and see whatever it is that i am doing. for example, in my last few months at CEDO, my momma came out to visit. they had driven out to help me move, and my dad came out before he went to join my mom in boston, but mom hadn’t been out since my first weekend.

and we did a good job of covering the highlights of peñasco – tidepooling, pinacate, eating out at various places, wandering about, and (because my mom loves petroglyphs), we drove down to caborca to them (i had gone there last year).

Photobucket

i heard from some herpetologist visiting CEDO that right before you hit the new visitor’s center at pinacate, there are tons of chuckwallas. now, put me on a rocky beach and i can spot all sorts of invertebrates, but in the desert, staring at rocks … well, let’s just say that i don’t have an eye for desert reptiles. but, he swore, these are obvious, bite-you-in-the-face chuckwallas. so, mom and i decided to check them out, and boy was this herp guy right – there were chuckwallas everywhere!

Photobucket

i don’t know much about chuckwallas, but see how he has all that flappy skin around his belly? apparently, this is so that he can get himself into a crack and puff himself up so that nothing drags him out! pretty cool.

later that week we went off to caborca, to the same petroglyph dotted hill. it was equally cool – although this time we didn’t go with a guide, just drove around by ourselves and climbed all over the hills, checking them out.

there is also a fairly famous mission in caborca (part of father kino’s mission route), so we drove into town to see that as well. sadly we couldn’t go inside since it was Sunday and there was a mass going out, but the building itself and architectural details were beautiful.

and of course we also went tidepooling. we (all the family) are huge tidepool fans, so it was a basic requirement. two cool things:

la ciénega de santa clara

where the colorado river once was is a remnant fresh (brackish?) water swamp, la ciénega de santa clara. it's near ejido san luis johnson and some guys from the ejido offer eco-touristic activities, like canoe tours of the ciénega and has some cabins you can rent for the night as well. it's really a good movement in the area as an alternative sources of livelihood and motivation to preserve the ciénega. since the virtual disappearance of the delta habitat (have i mentioned this? due to damming in the US, the colorado river delta area is now 5% of what it once was!), it is now a critically important habitat for tons of bird species, including the yuma clapper rail.

ivan and i were trying to escape from peñasco (and frankly i'd wanted to go there for ages just because i'd heard so much about it) so on a whim we drove up there - just for the afternoon. someday i'd like to go back and get one of these canoe tours and maybe even stay in their cabins.

the road there is interesting, since you basically drive straight through where the river once was - now all salt flats and dried out mud.

and the ciénega is nice - very quiet and peaceful. very beautiful. it is definitely a place to come back to to explore a bit more.

climbing pinacate

climbing the santa clara volcano (pinacate peak, to be specific, and the big shield volcano north of peñasco) always felt like it was one of those things that i had to do before i left. and then, you know how it goes, things come up, you can't get away, then it's too hot, blah blah blah and you just never get around to doing it. for my birthday this year, before the heat really set in, i was determined to do it, so iván and i planned it all out, and camped at cono rojo one night to get up early and climb it the next morning.

[trailhead]

the hike is 24 kilometers round trip, and the summit is 3957 ft. the trail goes all the way around the base of the volcano and then up the backside from where you camp, making a direct line of something around 5 km into 12 km one way. oh well. the truth is that the hike is stunningly beautiful, passing through the volcanic field, with excellent views, so you can't really complain too much. plus, after all the crazy rain we had this late winter, there were still a number of flowers along the way.

from the peak, you should be able to see over the gulf to baja (it's actually how father kino confirmed that baja was a peninsula, not an island!), but the day was hazy, so no go on that. but it was still a great view of the reserve and all the different craters and cinder cones!
