baja: cabo pulmo

cabo pulmo is a national marine park and is the only "true" marine reserve in baja - it is 100% completely a no-take zone, is well enforced, and has been for 15 years. it has a lot of things going for it - it's in a secluded area, and never supported a large fishing community, and the local community has really taken advantage of the park to promote tourism in the area. it definitely has a bit of a reputation for having tons of fish. so, obviously we went diving, and i did a few interviews in a temporary fishing camp nearby as well.

cabo pulmo es un parque nacional y es la unica reserva marina verdadera en baja - 100% completamente una zona de no pesca, tiene vigilancia, y ha ido así por 15 años. tiene muchas cosas que le ayuda - esta en una área isolada y nunca soportó una comunidad de pescadores grande. y la comunidad local ha aprovechado el parque para promover turismo. tiene una reputación de tener mucho peces. obviamente, fuimos a bucear, y hice algunas entrevistas en un campo de pesca temporal cerca también.

it was basically our last stop and we actually camped right on the beach and relaxed a bit too!

and of course the dive was pretty cool. tons of fish - more than i've ever seen in mexico. no inverts though, which was a bit weird.

baja: la paz

we rushed through la paz on the way to cabo pulmo, only spending one evening here. we were rushed because we left san diego late, stayed more time in bahía and loreto than planned and in general the trip is long so takes a lot of time. we needed to go to cabo pulmo for at least two days and get back to la paz by monday to take the ferry across, so it was just a brief stay.

my general impression is that it's a pretty nice city, although i have very little to base that on. the commercial center of the city is just like any other - crowded and noisy. cannot be avoided, i suppose.

the malecón and beach front area is really beautiful (no surprises there). it has these great statues of different things related to the sea all along it. as usual, lots of people walking with their families, running or riding bikes, enjoying the outdoors.

pasábamos corriendo por la paz en ruta a cabo pulmo, solamente pasando una noche aquí. teníamos prisa porque salimos tarde de san diego, y luego nos quedamos mas tiempo en bahía y loreto que planeábamos y el viaje en general es muy largo, entonces toma tiempo. necesitábamos ir a cabo pulmo por al menos dos dias y volver a la paz el lunes para tomar el ferry a mochis, entonces, fue rapido la visita.

en general, creo que es una cuidad bien, aun que conocí muy poco. el centro comercial es como lo de cualquier cuidad - mucha gente y con mucho ruido. no lo puede evitar, supongo.

el malecón y playa es muy hermosa (no sorpresa). tiene estatuas bonitas de cosas relatadas al mar. y como siempre, mucha gente andando con sus familias, corriendo o en bicicletas, disfrutando el ambiente.







i am still a bit confused about how the sun set. we were on baja, on the gulf side, and yet the sun set over the water? i just ... cannot figure it out. i understand that la paz is set in a bit of a bay, but even so, the ocean is to the north, not really west. perplexing ...

todavia no entiendo muy bien como era el atardecer. estamos en baja, el lado de golfo, pero el sol bajo por encima del mal? la paz esta en una bahía, pero aun así, el mar esta al norte, no al oeste.





we also went to balandra beach, which is a bit out of town and locally very popular. it's in a little bay, calm and very shallow. apparently, a number of years ago, they were going to build a big tourist development here and the community really rose up against it and stopped it.

también fuimos a playa balandra, lo que esta afuera del pueblo y muy popular entre los locales. esta en una bahía chiquita, tranquila. hace algunos años, iban a construir un desarrollo de turismo aquí y la comunidad se lo protestó y lo pararon.







at the mouth of the bay, there is a famous rock that looks like a mushroom, and has become kinda the symbol for la paz. there's even a statue of it in the center, haha. so we walked along the beach out to see it and saw a seahorse!!!

en la boca de la bahía, hay una piedra famosa que parece como un hongo, y es como un simbolo de la paz. aun hay una estatua de ella en el centro, jaja. entonces, caminamos por la playa hacia allí y vimos un caballito del mar!!







so that's really all i have for la paz ... someday i will have to come back and spend some more time here.

es todo por la paz ... algún día tendre que volver.

baja: diving in loreto

we were lucky while in loreto - some acquaintances from the NGO COBI (comunidad y biodiversidad) were there doing monitorings. these are the same guys that gave me that course i took last summer, so we offered to help out/invited ourselves along with them. they gave us an easy monitoring - you swim in one direction for 30 minutes and note all the commercial fish species you see. so it's half monitoring, half fun dive!

they launch from this place just to the south of loreto called "puerto escondido" (hidden port) which was absolutely lovely.

tenemos suerte en loreto - algunos conocidos de la ONG COBI (comunidad y biodiversidad) estaban allí haciendo monitoreos. son los mismos que me dieron el curso que tomé el ultimo verano en peñasco, entonces los ofrecemos a ayudar/nos invitamos a bucear. nos dieron un monitoreo facil - nadas por 30 minutos y notas todos los peces comerciales que ves. la mitad es como monitoreo y la otra diversion!

desembarcamos de un lugar al sur de loreto se llama "puerto escondido" lo que estuvo muy hermoso.





and really, the sea was as flat as a lake that morning. really stunning. like bahía de los angeles, loreto has lots of islands close by and the mountains come right up to the sea, so it's pretty spectacular.

y el mar estuvo como una alberca en la mañana. precioso. y como bahía de los angeles, loreto tiene muchas islas cercas y las montañas viene al lado del mar, entonces, si es impresionante.







and the diving was great. afterwards they told us that this isn't even one of the best spots around here, but i loved it. one - i didn't even wear my wetsuit. in la jolla, the water temp is about 52 - which means i wear my 7mm wetsuit, a vest, and a hood and i'm still cold. it was about 83 here and i just wore my rash guard and swim suit. ahhhh it's a freeing feeling. two and three - the visibility was pretty good and we saw tons of things, including lots of fish i'd never seen up in peñasco (basically because they've fished them all out ...).

el buceo estuvo fantastico! después, nos dijeron que esto no fue uno de los mejores lugares aquí, pero me encantó. uno - no usé mi traje. en la jolla, la temperatura es 52 - entonces uso mi 7 mm traje, chaleco, y un hood y aun así tengo frio! aquí estuvo 83 y solo usé mi rash guard y traje de baño. ahhh mucho mejor. dos y tres - la visibilidad estuvo bien y vimos muchas cosas, incluyendo muchas peces que nunca vi en peñasco (porque sacaron todos ...).

baja: bahía concepción and loreto

after leaving bahía de los angeles, we headed south to loreto. the highway stays pretty close to the beach, which, once you start to enter bahía concepción, is spectacular. having desert and cactus and mountains and the sea all in the same place? ideal and perfect. as we approached bahía concepción, i am pretty sure i gasped as we rounded the first bend.

después de salir de bahía de los angeles, nos dirigimos al sur hacia loreto. la carretera esta muy cerca a la costa, y cuando entres a bahía concepción, esta preciosa. a tener el desierto y cactus y montañas y el mar en el mismo lugar? perfecto.





as i said, could it be more incredible? i want to live here.

loreto is a pretty cool place as well. iván had a three-month stay here a few years ago and still has a number of friends in the area, so we stayed with them, visited, and chatted. interesting place to interview fishermen about their thoughts on management and marine reserves too, especially because the whole community just finished a environmental campaign with the NGO, rare. it was nice to talk to some of the people working in the campaign and with the fishermen - between the two i think i got a good idea of the situation there.

as far as interviews go, it was the same basic deal - driving around and showing up at people's homes. went a bit better than it did in bahía de los angeles. it is certainly a time consuming endeavor, even though really interesting and i really did enjoy talking with lots of different people.

me gustó loreto. iván vivia aquí por tres meses haces algunos años y aun tiene amigos en el pueblo, entonces los conocí, nos quedamos con ellos, visitando y platicando. es un lugar interesante para hacer entrevistas a cerca de las perspectivas de pescadores sobre áreas marinas protegidas y manejo también, porque la comunidad acaba de terminar con una campaña sobre el medio ambiente con una ONG, rare. estuvo bien a platicar con la gente trabajando en esa y con los pescadores - los dos me dio una impresión interesante de la situación allí.

con respecto a las entrevistas, fue el mismo - manejando y parando en las casas de la gente. mejor que en bahía de los angeles. toma mucho tiempo, pero es muy interesante y la verdad es que disfrute a hablar con diferente personas.







and yes, i liked loreto a lot. it has a nice atmosphere and cultural aspect to it. there's a mission in the center and while we were there, it was the celebration of the virgin of the city (or something like that), so one afternoon, there was a procession in the pangas, bringing the virgin into the town. there was a banda playing on one of the pangas too! haha!

que me gusto de loreto fue el ambiente en general y que tiene un aspecto de cultura. hay una mision en el centro y cuando estábamos, hubo algún tipo de celebración con la virgen de la cuidad, entonces un dia en la tarde, hubo una procesion en pangas, llevando la virgen al pueblo. y estaba una banda en una de las pangas - tocando y todo! jaja.

baja: bahía de los angeles

we left our camp first thing in the morning and drove straight to bahía de los angeles, greeted by this sight:

salíamos temprano en la mañana y manejábamos directo a bahía de los angeles, donde nos saludaba con esta vista:





how stunning it is. set in a little bay, surrounded by islands, including one of the big islands - angel de la guarda (the other one on the sonora side is isla tiburón). beautiful setting for this tiny little village. it has a bit of a reputation for a number of reasons, the beautiful islands, an escape for gringos and ex-pats, and because every summer, herds (herds?) of whale sharks come here to feed. this was also the first place i did interviews, which means i was a bit nervous.

for some unknown reason, i thought that the whole aspect of finding fishermen to interview would be a piece of cake. like they would all be in the some place or ... something. this, to no one's surprise but my own, turned out to not be the case. thankfully, from CEDO, i know a few divers in bahía and iván had been in touch with them, so we showed up at their house and i did my first interviews with them, which made it a little less nerve-racking. we also met a guy who works for the NGO pronatura and he invited us to stay at their office/house - thank goodness! hooray for air conditioning! it was likely over 100 and humid and after the summer of cold in san diego, i was simultaneously delighted to be warm, wearing shorts again and melting.

que hermosa es. esta en una bahía, rodeada de islas, incluyendo una de las islas grandes - angel de la guarda (la otra en el lado sonorense es isla tiburón). bonita lugar por este pueblito. es algo famoso por algunas razones, las islas, un escape por gringos, y porque cada verano, muchos tiburones ballenas llegan a alimentarse. también, era el primer lugar donde hice entrevistas, entonces estuve algo nerviosa.

por alguna razón desconocida, pense que seria facil a encontrar pescadores para entrevistarles. como se todos estarían en el mismo lugar o ... algo. eso, que es una sorpresa para nadie aparte de mi, no fue verdadero. con agradecimiento, de CEDO, conozco algunos buzos de bahía y iván los contactaba antes de irnos, entonces nos fuimos a su casa y hice mis primeras entrevistas con ellos, lo que lo hizo un poco menos angustioso. también conocimos a alguien quien esta trabajando con la ONG pronatura y nos invitó a quedar en la oficina/casa de pronatura. gracias a dios! hurra por aire! la temperatura estuvo mas alta que 100 y con humedad y después el verano frio de san diego, estuve muy feliz a tener calor, usando mis shorts.

and then .... we drove around fairly aimlessly and stopped at random people's homes and asked if there were any fishermen there i could interview. ahhh this was awful. i felt horrible for intruding. so iván got the fun job of doing that little intro (thank goodness he was there) and then turned it over to me.

it was an interesting experience. i had thought it could go two ways - they see a white, female and tell me what they think i want to hear, or they see that i am completely removed from any sort of organization here, so are honest with me. and i really think the latter was the case, thankfully. the interview is designed to be about 20 minutes, and often we were there for over an hour talking to these guys. not so bad, given that this is the typical view from their home:

fue una experiencia interesantes. hubiera pensado que puede ir por dos maneras - ven a una mujer, gringa, y me dicen que piensen quiero oir, o ven que no estoy trabajando con nadie aquí, y están sinceros. y creo que fue el segundo. la entrevista debería estar algunos 20 minutos, y muchas veces estamos platicando por mas de una hora. no fue tan mal, con esta vista de sus casas:





a lot of people are in bahía at the moment for squid, and many from other areas. they fish at night, leaving at sunset. and many are gone all night. no one said this was an easy job ...

muchas personas esta en bahía en este momento para sacar calamar, y muchos de otras regiones. pescan en la noche, saliendo durante en atardecer. y muchos están trabajando por toda la noche. nadie dijo que ser un pescador fue facil ...





since the whale sharks were there at the moment, we of course could not forego the opportunity to go snorkeling with them. so we got our last interviewee to take us out. they are so close to shore and the fishermen drove (what is the verb for driving a boat? anyone?) us straight over to one - these guys sure know these waters well. i didn't even see it until he specifically pointed it out

pues los tiburones ballenas estaban allí, entonces por supuesto quisiéramos ir a nada con ellos. entonces, pedimos al ultimo pescador a llevarnos. están muy cercanos a la costa y él sabia exactamente donde estarían - saben la área muy bien. ni lo vi hasta me lo mostró.





both iván and i were so excited. and then when the moment came to actually jump into the water, we both hesitated. i mean, this is a shark we are talking about. and a pretty freaking big one - our guess is about 7 or 8 meters. iván said, "maybe i will just watch from up here" and i was like, "there is no way i am getting in the water with it alone!"

so. swimming with a whale shark is simultaneously awesome and terrifying. the tail was probably a good meter tall (yes, tall). you know it won't hurt you - they eat plankton - but it's still a shark.

nosotros dos estamos muy emocionados, y luego en el momento a brincar en el agua, nosotros dos lo dudamos. digo, es un tiburón. y muy grande - 7 o 8 metros. dijo iván, "quizas te veo de aquí" y yo, "no hay una manera en que voy sola!"

nadando con él fue simultáneamente increíble y aterrador. la cola era por lo mejor un metro de altura (si, de altura). sabes que no te va a lastimar - comen plankton - pero aun es un tiburón.









oh, and i almost forgot this sign - for a little village called "la gringa". haha. i love it. i actually want the sign!
